hague, i have called, and called and called and -- nothing. that is what i am getting from the phone calls right now. ♪ egypt erupts into chaos as the world watches in horror. the question now, what can america do about it? and get ready for the rain, rounds of it, rolling into the already soggy south. there's fears of flooding and they're very real this morning. and baseball night never be the same. the big decision that could change america's favorite pastime as we know it. good morning, everyone, i'm brianna keilar. >> and i'm martin savidge in for victor blackwell. it it is 6:00 a.m., and this is "new day saturday."

>> that's the unmistakable sound of heavy gunfire ringing out. egypt, a critical ally of the united states is bracing for more unrest after a very bloody and violent friday. dozens of people reported killed in clashes between the security forces and muslim brotherhood supporters in what was called a day of rage. hundreds are under arrest. we're also hearing that some people have left a mosque in central cairo where they have taken refuge all night long. let's go to reza sayah in cairo. >> hey there, reza, can you tell us about the latest situation there at the mosque? >> reporter: incredibly after 17 hours, the siege and standoff still continues. some dramatic images coming to us from state media about a couple of hours ago. some of the protesters who were holed up inside, women, coming out, escorted out by armed security forces who were firing

in the air. in an apparent effort to disperse angry crowds who had gathered around. this particular mosque is an area in cairo that was supposed to be the final destination for tens of thousands of supporters of the ousted president mohamed morsi and the muslim brotherhood marching against it yesterday. during these marches there are clashes, scores of people were injured, scores of people were hurt. many were taken to this mosque. also racing to this mosque were protesters who wanted to take cover from the gunfire. then came 7:00 p.m. the curfew went in effect. these people, these protesters were effectively trapped inside. armed security forces surrounded the mosque. also surrounding the mosque, unknown gunmen. at some point, state media aired video of these protesters attacked the mosque.

these were apparently anti-morsi protesters, throughout the evening, security forces were apparently trying to negotiate with people to sccome out. but apparently, they were too afraid to come out. during the overnight hours, at least some of those protesters have come out, some have stayed in. that's why at this hour remarkably the intense standoff and siege in mosque continues in cairo. >> reza, the muslim brotherhood is calling for a week of this, urging supporters to go back on the streets? >> reporter: yeah, there's no question about it. this is further indication that these two side, digging in. the muslim brotherhood insists that they're not going to stop demonstrating. there's all sorts of indications that this interim government backed by the military has no intentions of including the muslim brotherhood in the political landscape. and that's because increasingly you're seeing them use aggressive or tactics to get them off the streets.

hundreds of these protesters, many of them unarmed, have been killed. over the past six weeks. international human rights groups have condemned security forces of using excessive force. and again, yesterday, we witnessed with our own eyes, security forces using gunfire on protesters who were unarmed. and when you take a step back from this conflict, what's most alarming, there's absolutely no indication that this conflict is going to end anytime soon. >> reza, we'll be checking with you throughout the morning. reza sayah with us in cairo. thank you very much. now, president obama has condemned the protests and the white house has canceled meetings with egypt. cnn's wolf blitzer spoke with senator mccain about their concerns of safety. >> what worries me, senator, i

don't know if it concerns you as much, the 700,000 soldiers right now in sanaa, in part of that multinational peacekeeping force in sanaa that's been in place quietly all these years since the israeliian peace treaty was signed in 1979, how concerned are you about the troops lightly armed in sanaa? >> i'm concerned about that. i'm concerned about the safety of american citizens. under mubarak there was a tremendous amount of anti-americanism and anti-israel fostered by the mubarak government. this government is fostering that to an incredible degree, pictures of president obama in the street, and our fine ambassador there, ann patterson. they accused me, the leading newspaper in cairo said that john mccain had hired muslim

brotherhood on his staff. the intensity of the anti-americanism which is being stoked by the military junta makes a lot of our american citizens unsafe. >> although the u.s. has condetermined the bloodshed in egypt it has not decided to suspend the $1.6 million of aid to egypt. they're anot calling that a cou. that aid is typically used to buy tanks and aircraft produced in the u.s. so conduct aid would also impact american countries. and only four other countries get what egypts get. then afghanistan, $2.3 billion. and pakistan with $2.1 billion. then iraq with $1.7 billion and then egypt. turning to weather. we'll take a live look at the

shot of the sun coming up over boston. finally after a week of heavy storms, but it is a very different story across much of the southeast. let's bring in meteorologist jennifer delgado at the cnn weather center. >> good morning, martin. it's a new day there in boston. 76 degrees. a lot of sunshine in boston. but rain is going to be heavy in parts of the southeast. once again, we're expecting to some of these locations to pick up a couple inches of rainfall today and tomorrow. we're talking four to six inches has already fallen in parts of georgia and florida. in fact, we have video coming out of alabama. this is to the west of montgomery. you're looking at people driving through flooded roadways. martin and brianna, we say this all the time, don't drive through flooded streets. that could certainly be deadly. back to the radar. the rain is works its way to the florida coast. you can see from the florida

panhandle, including parts of southern alabama, birmingham, you're seeing rain later on today. we're talking six or more inches anywhere in this area in orange. that's why we do have flood watches and warnings in place for this big rainfall event. and of course, we still are talking about the tropics. we're watching an area of low pressure, you see right in the gulf of mexico. the convection is to the north. not very well organized. right now, it has about a 40% chance of tropical cyclone development. all the way out in the ocean, another storm, erin, it's called a fish storm. it doesn't look like it's going to land. that's good news. interacting with dry air. but for today, not all bad out there. the northeast, sunshine and cool. cool in the south because of rain. look at these high temperature, guys. we have a lot of 80s today and they will stick around until tomorrow, we'll see a warming trend but that's not coming in until late last week. so you get the good and the bad,

martin. >> we'll keep an eye on the gulf, apparently. police in denver have detained a man that say they set booby traps on the streets. the denver post reports that daniel abate was critically shot. no one was hurt and the other tank was dismantled. to new jersey where governor chris christie gets ready to sign a medical marijuana bill if the legislate making tour key changes. christy wants ed only pot to be available to only pediatricians and kids. chris christie is under pressure of a day of a father who said medical marijuana would help his daughter. and two companies posted earnings that failed to impress. and others are worried about the fed pulling back on the massive

>> reporter: the fundraising drew a large crowd, cash sales and 20% of the sales all donated to the anderson family. >> we have a lot of expenses in front of us. right now, we're just looking for her future and get her settled. >> reporter: a family hoping to help hannah adjust after she was alleged kidnapped by her father's best friend. >> we keep hearing the term uncle jim, had really was like an uncle jim to him. >> reporter: this new released certain warrant obtained by cnn affiliate knfb said that police discovered a handwritten note and letters from hannah that proves that dimaggio had control over that house. police also recovered incendiary devices leading them to believe the house fire was caused by human actions. given what we now know about hannah's kidnapping some of the other items quite chilling. empty camping gear. boxes that once contained

people, two of them kids, while it's against a law to own a python in brantford, no charges have been filed. a black bear taxied a 12-year-old in wexford county. the young girl is recovering after surgery after suffering deep cuts in her thighs. officials want to test the bear for disease. and general motors will recall nearly 300,000 of its chevrolet cruzes because of problems with the brakes. the company says it knows of 27 possible crashes due to the property. so far, no injuries have been reported. owners can take their car to i dealership to fix the issue. if you live in the south, you probably wish we stopped at four. number five, it's going to be a very wet weekend from the texas gulf coast all the way to indiana. let's bring in jennifer delgado. >> you're right. let's start off this morning. and a good morning to you if you're in atlanta you're waking

up to cloudy skies as well as some rain an drizzle out there. you're looking at centennial park. guys, you see the windshield wiper out there doing its job. unfortunately, we'll need more than that. six inches of rainfall on the gulf coast. martin, it's been almost three months since that monster tornado just tore through moore, oklahoma. that killed 27 people, seven kids in an elementary school. and it triggered emotional reunions for survivors and their parents. >> this week, students across that area returned to their classrooms. and many of them obviously anxious about how school might be different after the tornado. our nick valencia was there. >> reporter: there are a lot of emotions when it's time to go back to school.

especially when part of that school isn't there anymore. >> look at that. that's destroyed. i don't know how we survived this. >> reporter: i first met dylan months ago in the days that immediately followed the ef-5 tornado that wrecked moore, okay. the word "hero" got thrown around those days but ellis was nothing short of them. >> i saw her go up, grabbed her, laid on her and grabbed on to one of the lockers. once it's over, i push her out of the way and all the debris started to hit me. >> reporter: how did you know to think so fast? >> how did you know what to do? >> i just thought of her as my family. what would i do didn't think, just did it. >> reporter: like most of the students who survived the tornado, ellis had a lot of time over the summer to think about what happened. excited, nervous, anxious, those are just some of the feelings he said he's had about starting eighth grade. after everything that happened,

he said he's just ready for things to be back to normal again. >> it's going to be a process to get back. but it's going to eventually get the way it was before. >> reporter: first grade teacher lane amaze. >> you hear the children that they don't want to go to school, the ones i had in the summer, they would tell me, i don't want to go to school miss mayes, that breaks my heart. they kind of lost their innocence. >> reporter: as she welcomes students to a makeshift room this year, she feels they that they might not feel safe. >> that's the strength that we have to draw on. >> and nick valencia joining us in the studio. you stayed in touch with a lot

of the folks that you met there. how are they looking forward to what is an important day for them? >> it was an absolutely important day. it's been back breaking, physically and i motionally. they're humbled by the support. strangers paying attention to their community. it's been very humbling to wanele mayes. i was talking to her last night, she said that's what she focuses on, the support from strangers throughout the world. >> it's awesome that you see the silver lining how people come together. >> appreciate it. now, to newtown, connecticut, where a very different tragedy struck their element stare school eight months ago. while the 2012 mass murder in sandy hook sparked a conversation with gun sales, sales are in fact skyrocketing. >> and on double the amount.

poppy harlow reports. >> i'm nancy. >> how. >> reporter: she's a grandmother about to become a first-time gun owner. nancy said the new laws passed in connecticut, among the toughest in the country, are a big reason she's buying her first firearm. >> our rights are being slowly infringed upon. and that this whole idea of controlling guns has come to my back door. in other words, there could be a time when i may never be able to get a firearm. >> reporter: elis lived in newtown for 28 years. her desire to own a gun is part of a spike in the state. newtown vividly remembered for one of the worst massacres in u.s. history is on track this year to double the amount of pistol permits it issued last year. >> i'm concerned that it could get out of hand. nancy lanza had quite an arsenal in her home. you only have two hands.

how many guns can you fire at once? >> reporter: dave acert is an advocate. monty frank owns multiple guns but did not want to show them on camera out of respect for the victims. you went out and bought another gun after the shooting, why? >> that was 100% driven by the legislation. it's my responsibility to take care of and protect my family. >> reporter: it's hard for neal russo to understand as he grieves the loss of his daughter lauren killed in sandy hook. >> the heart's in a different way. i had my first dream, my daughter was in the dream a week ago. i said, lauren is dead. how can she be there? she's dead. >> reporter: what do you think when you see the numbers? >> it's sad. it's really sad. there's no other words to say

it. it makes me sad to think that people -- they feel that they're protecting themselves. but they're just adding to their problem. >> reporter: there was also a surge in gun sales in colorado, following the aurora movie theater massacre. and after the 2011 mass shooting in tucson, background checks for gun purchases in arizona spiked. while nancy elis grieves for the victims of her tragedy in her back yard -- >> my heart breaks for them, it truly does. >> reporter: -- for her, this is about protecting the rights. >> did the guns as you the tragedy? no, it is the person behind the gun that caused the tragedy. >> reporter: nationwide fbi background checks for people wanting to buy guns have risen steadily over the past three years. and although the number of americans who have owned guns have actually declined for several decades, what we're seeing is more guns in the hands of fewer people.

and that is something that really concerns newtown residents dave acert and monty frank who you saw in the story. the university of maryland eastern shore announced plans to purchase 200 bulletproof whiteboards. yep, they actually exist. the 18 by 20-inch boards weigh less than four pounds. they're designed to protect your head and torso. the school said they paid $60,000 for the new boards which will be in classrooms -- or for the fall semester start, that's next monday. >> i've never heard of those, did you? >> no. well, it is this summer's most talked about movie. >> now oprah winfrey and forest whitaker are hitting it big in the box office in "the butler." >> up next, michelle turner goes behind the scenes with the film's biggest stars. right now, 7 years of music is being streamed.

have been killed in violent clashes. hundreds have been injured rp. armed security forces fired guns in the air as they escorted women from a cairo mosque where they had taken refuge overnight. >> cnn's ian lee is in cairo. ian, what's the latest at that mosque? >> reporter: the situation is still very tense at that mosque. we were hearing that gunfire earlier this morning from our position here. the soldiers trying to take women from the mosque, lead them away. but a mob of people besieged them, chanting the general's name, the head of egypt's military saying that these people are bad people. they're traitors, the women coming out of the mosque. still a very intense scene as people inside of the mosque are afraid to come out. they're afraid for their lives that if they do come out, this mob could attack them or they could be arrested by the military. >> and, ian, i know the muslim brotherhood are asking that the

protests continue on a daily basis. where does it end and could it escalate in all out warfare? >> reporter: well, we won't see the type of warfare as we were seeing in libya or currently in syria. this would be more street battles between the military and the morsi demonstrators. but it really wouldn't spread throughout the country to every street and every square. it is isolated within the cities. but there are very intense, very bloody battles when you have the two sides squared off. over 600 people have died in the last two days between the two battles. we're expecting it to continue as both sides are digging in their heels. both sides unwilling to back down. >> all right, ian lee, thank you very much. now, we want to show you some new amateur video out of egypt. we have to warn you, it's disturbing and it's hard to watch. you see a man unarmed, walking straight into automatic weapons fire. you see him with his arms uplifted. as the guns keep firing and then

he crumples to the ground. we need to add that cnn has thought confirmed the authenticity of this video. >> israel is watching what happens there very closely. it relies on the military for help in securing the border. jim clancy is in israel. what is the biggest concern about the violence? >> reporter: well, you know, israel doesn't have any lot of choices in this. they're not saying anything publicly knowing that could only backfire for this country. but you're right, they do have concerns. the choices as you say were limited. it's not a good or bad situation, bad or worse. israel looks on telling cnn on condition of anonymity that the worst case scenario is currently a case of chaos and anarchy on

streets. this is the fear, because they have a common border as you note there with egypt. a lot of extremist groups there in the last week alone, they fired or attempted to fire missiles at least two times at israel. and so there's concern that the military may have to take its eye off the ball there. and, you know, that could be, you know, a potent problem for the israelis. so they're looking on with some concern. hamas, on the other hand, has been public. it held a demonstrating last night in gaza. it's branding what happened this week in egypt massacres of the muslim brotherhood supporters who have taken to the streets. and it's not surprising, no love lost, between the muslim brotherhood, its offshoot hamas and ally and the egyptian military. you know after mohamed morsi was overthrown, egypt's military moves in and destroyed hundreds of tons leading into gaza from the sanaa.

those carried cash, they carried arms. this undermined the position of hamas. they're seen by the military as an ally. across the arab word, we've got creation. you can see the difference between the groups critical of the islam brotherhood, that support the military. those that are labeling the z n demonstrations and what happened in cairo was massacre. saudi arabia, the images of the burning building in cairo. and the wealthy gulf arab states have pumped $12 billion, offered up that aid package to the military government. and they criticize what they said were muslim brotherhood efforts to undermine the economy of egypt. so very are different views. you know, turkey coming down calling for a u.n. investigation. some of the gulf states like saudi arabia clearly supportive

of the military authorities in cairo. very differing opinions across the region today. back to you. >> jim clancy in jerusalem. thank you for that insight. senators john mccain and lindsey graham is saying what's happening to civilians in egypt is as a massacre. >> they say it's still considerable. they add, quote, whether it is egypt, syria, iraq or the wider region, the failure of the obama administration to use influence to shape events that this critical part of the world has only diminished our credibility, limited our influence and constrained our policy options. the events now unfolding in egypt and the middle east will directly impact the national security interests of the united states and we cannot remain this engaged. president obama has condemned that aid, but the u.s. aid continues to trickle in. dan loathian is in martha's vineyard where the president is on vacation.

dan, why did the president decide to step up that between egypt and the u.s.? >> well, there had been impact for the obama administration to do much more. there and of course, was that delay of f-16s to the egyptian air force. but what the obama administration is not seeing is this quick transition to the elected government in egypt. so they really wanted to send a strong message to the egyptians to put pressure on them. they began, according to a senior administration official, talking about pulling out of this biannual meetings known as bright star, about the time in june when they decided to cancel the f-16 jets but when the violence really began escalating that's when the president

decided late wednesday night that in fact they would pull out of the those joint exercises. do they believe that will have direct impact on the ground, even a state department official saying there are limitations to this move but they do believe it will send a strong message to the current government there in egypt. >> so, dan, the other leverage that administration has over egypt is this more than $1 billion in aid. the administration is not calling what happened a coup, because that would obviously trigger a pulling out of that aid. but how are they going to use this as leverage? what happens to the aid? >> and you're right, brianna, that's the key thing. it really is sort of the biggest stick if you will, leverage, that the u.s. has in trying to push the current government there along to this transition. the administration does not want to label what happened in egypt a coup because they have said

they don't believe it is in the best interest of the united states to do so. so they're still holding on to this $1.3 billion in military aid, hoping that they can still use that to sort of influence what is happening there in egypt. the president did not specifically talk about that during his remarks when he interrupted his vacation here on martha's vineyard this week but he certainly hinted that is it something that could happen next. take a listen. >> going forward, i've asked my national security team to assess the actions taken by the interim government. and further steps that we may take as necessary with respect to the u.s./egyptian relationship. >> so even though the president has been here on vacation, he has been getting rel updates from his national security team. the white house has released some photos of the president on the phone with his team. in fact, one of the photos came just right before the president came out and addressed the nation about the steps that the u.s. would be taking and

canceling the biannual enter sizes with the egyptian government. susan rice, his national security adviser has been here on the trip with the president, also giving him regular updates as well. brianna, martin. >> dan loathian, thanks very much. now to idaho. fresh hotshot teams are rolling into the resort area around sun valley. a wildfire has scorched 100 square miles. it's still growing. authorities ordered 1600 families to evacuate. "usa today" is reporting one home has been burned to the ground and a second damaged. there are a number of celebrities, including tom hanks, bruce willis, who have got homes in sun valley. now from heavy rain and the possibility of flooding, you are looking at a live shot of panama city, florida. storms expected throughout the day all over the southeast. let's bring in meteorologist jennifer delgado in the cnn weather center. what are you looking at? >> anytime you see a beach, it's taking me there.

unfortunately, we're talking about a lot of rain in parts of florida and georgia. look at these totals over the last 24 hours. we're talking four to six inches of rainfall that's been coming down, flooding. let's go to video just to the west of montgomery, alabama. showing people driving through flooded streets. this is what happens when you have have days of heavy rainfall. the rain has nowhere to go. that's why we're worried today about that flooding threat. as we head into the radar and show you what's happening now. storms are popping up. you can see the heaviest rainfall affecting that panhandle region of florida. you can see in the locations some of those downpours are going to be heavy. that includes areas like jacksonville. as we go through today and tomorrow, keep that umbrella handy, six to eight inches anywhere in red. choose of the southern part of louisiana, new orleans, you could tap into this heavy rainfall as well. a lot of gulf moisture out there. that's why we have flood warnings in place. a lot of these watches are going

wounded by police. no one was hurt when that exploded. chris christie appears ready to sign a marijuana bill if the legislature makes two key changes. chris christie signalled that he wants edible pot available to kids only. christie under pressure from a dad who said medical marijuana would help his daughter. alex rodriguez -- >> maybe not not surprised here. no love for a-rod in boston. a sellout crowd of hostile sox fans verbally yelled and screamed. that he taunted him. it's going to be a wet weekend from the texas gulf coast all the way to south carolina. let's bring in jennifer delgado at the cnn weather center. jennifer. >> good morning, martin. you're right, a wet one out there. let's take a look at atlanta.

nick was there then, you went back. how's the healing? >> it's going. it's a grueling process. it's a long process. i've kept up with so many people i've met there it's been a roller coaster of emotions. trying to find the silver lining. for so many, it's wanting to get back to normal. that goes for teacher as well. i caught up with a teacher, she's telling me how she's coping. >> i'm not going to tell you there's not bad days, but then you just have to look at all the kindness and the goodness. and that helps you get through the bad days because there are bad days. but we're just going to use that strength to keep going. >> waynelm mayes was able to calm the students down as well as she could while rescuers came

to her aid. >> so many people remember what went down at the elementary school there. but this is obviously a somewhat small community. hour they doing overall? >> you know, it's step-by-step. i spoke to a family last week. believe it or not, just after three months, they're getting back to out of temporary housing and getting back to a new home. it's a step-by-step process for everybody. i's a resilient community. it's a really beautiful thing to see when you're there, despite everything that's happened, they're able to find, like we were talking last hour, the silver lining. >> like she said, the positive sort of brings, i guess, some healing to get over the negative. >> yeah. >> nick valencia, thank you. >> you bet. >> we wish them well on the start. >> we sure do. it's a big deal. well it is turning into one of the summer's hottest hits. singer robin thicke tops the charts with his new single "blurred lines." so why is he suing the family of

to use medical marijuana but only after sharp restrictions. >> that is after a father of a girl with epilepsy pleads with christie. >> i know you think it's simple -- >> i know you think it's simple, and it's not. >> please don't let my daughter die, governor. >> christi's response is not simple for parents of children that need medical marijuana. >> where does the issue stand? >> here is how we understand it. governor christie has sent this bill back to the state legislator, and he is saying he will sign it if edible forms of the form will be given only to minors, and in this case that would help this little girl.

he actually wants to keep in place the more strict requirement, current law that parents have a note from a pediatrician, a psychiatrist and the prescription from a qualifying doctor, and the bill as it stands now would eliminate the number of marijuana strains available in new jersey, and christie is okay with keeping that portion in the bill, meaning in essence that she could get the medical marijuana that she needs. last night that father, scott wilson, gave his reaction to our wolf blitzer, take a look. >> overall it's a victory for us but not a victory for all the patients of the new jersey. the lifting of the three strain limits was a huge victory for us and anybody in the state, and the edibles was really confounding decision, and we were not expecting that, and they are only allowing expanded

edibles for children or for minors. >> for those of you who are not familiar with the story or just getting up to speed. 2-year-old vivian, she has seizures and they could last up to an hour, and she is on a special diet and has special medications, and her parents think the only thing that controls the seizures is a medical form of marijuana, and cdc is known to help people with this syndrome. vivian is so young that of course she would not be able to leave the dry leaf form and smoke the marijuana, she is just two years old. and her parents say lozenges are not a option because she could

choke and there is sugar in those lozenges, and that's not an option for something with this syndrome, and this is a victory for vivian, because it appears if the legislature goes along with what christie wants, she could get the form, and it's an oil and it would be dropped on food or on to her tongue and this is something that her parents believe would control those severe seizures. >> there is a lot to it. thank you. and now to egypt. parts of the capital, cairo, looking and sounding more like a war zone. shots are ranging out today as security forces escorted women from a mosque where they took refuge overnight. 173 people were killed in

clashes on friday, and among the dead the son of a muslim brotherhood spiritual leader. the muslim pwrbrotherhood is calling for a week of protest across the country. now, fresh hotshot teams are rolling into the resort area of sun valley because a wildfire scorched 100 square miles and is still growing. "usa today" reports one home burned down to the ground, and several celebrities, tom hanks and bruce willis, have their homes there. let's bring in our meteorologist, jennifer delgado, and she is in the weather center to give us an idea of what is

ahead. >> more rain on the way for parts of the southeast, and that includes panama city. for areas especially along the florida panhandle, the rain is going to be coming down and they don't need it because a lot of the area already saturated. look at the totals over the last 48 hours, 4 to 6 inches, and some parts that you are seeing in red, it will lead to problems with flooding, and we have flood watches and warnings out there, and some of the locations are anticipating up to 6 inches of rainfall, and that means areas around tallahassee, and for new orleans we are talking heavy rainfall. now to the tropics, we follow an area, and it's hard to pick out, but this is the circulation we are watching. here is the convection and thunderstorm, a 40% chance to tropical cyclone. out in idaho, they are dealing with fires there, we want to

point out wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour, and the situation is still going to be dangerous, but it's not all bad out there. we head back over to the northeast. brianna, last week you were here, and it was nice, and look at these temperatures -- >> yeah, this is my luck. >> you can't spend that time outside, but the temperatures are going to be nice in the 70s and 80s, still running below after for this time of year. >> i am sorry for bringing the bad weather with me. jennifer delgado in the weather center. thanks. it has been three months almost since the monster tornado tore through moore, oklahoma. it triggered emotional reunions for young survivors and their parents. >> my heart just breaks. students across the area return to their classrooms, and many

were anxious about how school might be different after the tornado, and our nick valencia was there. >> reporter: there a lot of emotions when it's time to go back to school, especially when part of that school is not there anymore. >> you look there. that is destroyed. i don't know how we survived this. >> reporter: i met dillon months ago, and we followed the tornado that wrecked moore, oklahoma. the word hero got thrown around a lot those days, and ellis was nothing short of one. >> i see her going up and jump on her, and i grab on to the bottom of the lockers that were in the ground, and then once it's over i push her out of the way, and all of the debris starts to hit me. >> reporter: how did you think so fast? how did you think of doing what you did? >> just didn't think, did it.

>> reporter: ellis had a lot of time to think about what happened. excited. nervous. anxious. those are some of the feelings he said he has had about starting eighth grade, and after everything that happened he said he is just ready for things to be back to normal again. >> it is going to be a process to get back, but it's going to eventually get the way it was before. >> reporter: first grade teacher wishes it was that easy, and her school took a direct hit for the tornado, and she laid on her student and played music as the debris rained down on them. >> they don't want to go to school, the ones i had last year, and they saw me this summer and they said i don't want to go to school, and that breaks my heart because they kind of lost their innocence. >> reporter: she says the most difficult part for her will be making them feel like they are safe. >> a thunderstorm might scare

supporters. the egyptian government says 173 people killed and more than 1300 wounded. and the chaos spreads across egypt. there are growing calls for the u.s. to suspend the $1.5 billion in aid to egypt's military. let's go to jill doherty for more on that. >> americans have a big investment in egypt's security whether they know it or not. the egyptian military's bloody battle against demonstrators is feeling pressure in the u.s. to suspend military assistance. senator john mccain says the u.s. cannot be complicit in the mass slaughter of citizens. president obama won't go that far yet or pull the plug in

military assistance of u.s. gives egypt every year, and that includes hardware, like ma-a1 tan tanks, and servicing and technical support as well as military training, and cutting aid could end up cutting money to american defense contractors, and the u.s. doesn't hand over cash, it puts it in a trust fund, and the money gets paid to those contractors who provide jobs for americans. like the tank manufacturer in ohio, and the f-16 manufacturer in ft. worth, texas, and israel is nervous, and officials telling cnn that cutting military aid to egypt could hurt israel and the region, and egypt is one of two countries that made peace with israel in 1978,

and they see the egyptian military as the only stable force from keeping the country from chaos. >> another possible effective cutting military aid, weakening security for the canal, a crucial sea route for the oil supply, and egypt controls the canal and the troops guard it, and this is a battle between u.s. strategic interests and moral values, and so far for president obama, strategic interests are winning. >> thank you. coming up, oprah winfrey sits down with anderson cooper and opens up about her new role in "the butter" alebutler," and

night long. >> let's bring in fred from cairo. we know it's a confusing situation there, and what can you tell us about what is happening? how many people are still ins e inside? do we know? >> reporter: it has been fluid and kaoeu yac chaotic. and the information we got, and i have been covering this throughout the entire night, at some point there was 1,000 people holed up in the mosque, and inside you have morsi supporters, and outside you have the armed vigil anti-tkpraogroa. some of the morsi supporters, especially women have come out, and the security forces have protected them and firing in the air to keep the vigilante groups

away from them, and you have the exchanges of gunfire as you said, and it seems as though there is a shooter from the crowd inside the mosque, and the security forces returned fire as they said they would, and there was an issue if the security forces were attacked, they would return live fire. we could hear it ringing out throughout the morning in cairo, and there is a military helicopter circling over the area as well. this place was the place where the big slashes helped yesterday, and a lot of people were killed and a lot of people inside the mosque shot refuge there, and it was being used as a makeshift hospital and morgue throughout the night for the people killed in the clashes, martin. >> thank you for that. we will take a change and turn to weather. you will be looking at a live

shot from panama city, florida, and storms are expected throughout the day. let's bring in our meteorologist, jennifer delgado. >> there is a big threat for that, because the rain has been coming down over the last 48 hours, and once again in the southeast. look at the radar, lighting up parts of florida and alabama and georgia. and we will see the heaviest rainfall today, and look what has been coming down over the last 48 hours, some locations between 4 and 6 inches of rainfall, and you can see the area to the west of panama city, with all the rain around we have flood watches and warnings in place, and we are expecting some of the locations to pick up six more inches of rainfall, and it will work into louisiana and new orleans and regions like birmingham. as we go through today and tomorrow, we will continue to follow the heavy rainfall but we are following the tropics, and you can see the thunderstorms,

and this system has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone, and we will continue to follow that and of course we are tracking the fire danger out in the west across parts of idaho, and we are expecting some of the winds to gust up to 30 miles per hour, and that means the fire danger is not going to be over today, and it's not all bad news out there, though, and we leave the good for the end, and we will see the temperatures across the northeast below average, and it is going to be cooler on sunday as well, martin. >> jennifer, thank you very much for that. new jersey governor chris christie is signaling he is going to make it easier for sick kids to get medical marijuana. >> the move comes after the father of a young girl with a rare form of epilepsy confronted christie. >> these are complicated issues,

and -- i know you think it's simple, and it's not. >> please don't let my daughter die, governor. >> alina has been following this. where does the issue stand now? >> basically, governor christie sent it back to the legislature and he said he will sign it if edible forms of marijuana would be given only to minors, not to patients fr all ages, and that would help vivian here, and he wants to keep in place the requirement that in order to qualify for the program, parents would have to get a note from a pediatrician, a psychiatrist and a qualifying doctor, and some parents believe that is too strict. in fact, here is what vivian's father told wolf blitzer last night. >> it makes a lot of headache and heartache for parents to shop around for doctors that understand anything about medical marijuana to get them to

sign up for this, so for parents who are already going through a lot of trouble with what their children's ailments are, you don't have to do that for any other medication. >> and christie supports eliminating the number of strains, and that means vivian in essence would be able to get the medical marijuana she needs. for those of you getting up to speed on this story, the 2-year-old has a rare form of epilepsy, and she is a on special diet and has special meds, and her parents believe the only thing that will help to control it is a special form of medical marijuana, which is high is something called cdd, and low in the agent that gets you high. this is a victory for this family. if the state legislature goes

the search for a missing teen is growing desperate right now. that is 17-year-old alexus murphy, walking out on a vine video, but her twitter account frozen in time, unchanged since the day she went missing, two weeks ago today. her last message sent two hours before she was last seen, and it says i actually look cute right now. she was last spotted at a surveillance camera at this surveillance camera on august 3rd. and then taylor is not telling much to the fbi or anything. he admits to being with alexus

inside his camper the day she wept missing, but says she left with another man, a drug dealer. and then samantha clark went missing three years ago, and they fear he is connected to the disappearance there as well. laura, how is your family doing? >> they doing good as they can do. we are just holding on, keeping strong with family and friends and support. >> fill us in on the latest you know, clues, leads, even ideas. >> well, where we are right now is mr. taylor has been arrested, and he is not talking at this point or sharing any information about where alexis may be.
